Twelve years ago, 39 followers of a self-described new mesiah committed suicide, believing they were not going to their death, but to a new existence on a comet. The cult was called "heaven's gate".
The LA weekly gives a thoroughly research description of the followers of that self-described messiah and the one chosen to stay behind and tell the story.
For users of accessibility, this article is a bit of a problem. Firstly, it insists on using the quicktime player to show us images that don't do anything, and it won't take "no" for an answer. Secondly, it is divided into 7 lengthy pages, which means once you are getting settled down to read the article, you have to flip to the next screen, tell active-x to go ahead, and find the top of the article again. But, that's all doable, and an article well worth the effort.

I read all 7 pages and I don't understand it! That just...I don't know. I don't get it. lol
I agree, what happened to their sense of reality?
I donno, maybe it's my sense of reality that's screwed up.

I haven't read the article you posted here but is this cult the same cult whose members were all wearing brand new white nikes when they killed themselves? lol
Wow, was this really that long ago that the Heaven's Gate followers killed themselves? I'm feeling very old now. Interesting stuff, Bob.
